Research Associate or Fellow (Short-term contract) on Nature-based Solutions/

Ecosystem-based Approach (NbS/EbA) to Support Social Forestry Development in ASEAN


Start date: 1 November 2022

Project period: 9 months


  • Background: The UN-REDD Initiative Climate Change mitigation through social forestry actions in ASEAN countries (referred to as “the Initiative” hereon) aims to strengthen the evidence base for social forestry to mitigate climate change , facilitate its integration into countries National Determined Contributions (NDCs) and enhance climate finance opportunities for social forestry. The initiative will ultimately lead to progress towards assessing, accelerating and enhancing NDCs mitigation actions in the forest and landuse sectors. Nanyang Technological University (NTU) based on its cumulated experience on the subject matter, has been identified as a key partner for the implementation of Outcome 5 of the initiative ‘Capacities of ASEAN Member States (AMS) to quantify benefits, connect partners and operationalise Nature-based Solutions and Ecosystem-based Approach in the context of social forestry enhanced’.

  • In regard to Outcome 5, the UN-REDD initiative aims to enhance capacities on Nature Based Solutions (NbS)/ Ecosystem based adaptation (EbA) for social forestry development in ASEAN, expand partnerships and identify potential investment opportunities to support community livelihood. Noting the issue is cross-sectoral in nature, capacities will be built in collaboration with key relevant ASEAN Working Groups under the Food, Agriculture and Forestry (FAF) sectors.

  • We seek postgraduate level researchers to (i) develop Regional Guidelines on NbS/EbA for social forestry development in ASEAN, (ii) a toolkit for NbS implementation and (iii) provide capacity development support to support social forestry development in ASEAN.

Outputs: The researcher(s) will produce, achieve or deliver the following outputs:

Output 1: Regional Principles/Criteria/Standard/Guidelines of NbS/EbA Initiatives in forestry Output 2: Practical regional toolkit for NbS/EbA practices in (social) forestry and capacities of AMS build to enhance partnership on NbS/EbA in the AMS


Job responsibilities:

  • Review published and grey literature to compile outputs related to guidelines of NbS/EbA initiatives in social forestry in ASEAN

  • Conduct expert interviews and multi-stakeholder workshops and trainings independently

  • Conduct data analysis, writing, and development of project outputs

  • Assist in project management and management of the grant, as needed

Job Requirements:


Knowledge and Experience Requirements:

  • Masters or PhD degree in environmental studies, forestry, ecology, geography

  • Experience in conducting multi-stakeholder workshops, trainings and conducting interviews Prior experience in written research outputs

  • Key Competency Requirements:

  • Logical thinking and creative problem solving is essential - Ability to work independently to develop research outputs

  • Self-driven, highly motivated, collaborative, with an interest in working with other researchers and scientists (team player) to produce high-quality and impactful research. -

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
